A catalytic converter holding material, in which uses an inexpensive insulation material having excellent insulating properties is used, and which is low cost and has excellent insulating properties, is provided. This catalytic converter holding material, which is provided in a gap between a cylindrical catalyst carrier and a casing that houses the catalyst carrier, is characterized by being provided with: a holding section constituted by first inorganic fibers which have a heat shrinkage rate of not more than 1% at 1000°C; and an insulation section which is positioned adjacent to the holding section, and is constituted by second inorganic fibers which have a heat shrinkage rate that exceeds 1% at 1000°C.
