A method for inspecting the appearance of objects involves: acquiring images of an object under inspection, which includes surface texture information for the object under inspection, by mounting the object under inspection and photographing the object under inspection while continuously moving the object under inspection in at least on direction; reconstructing the three-dimensional shape of the object under inspection from the acquired surface protrusion/recess information for the object under inspection; obtaining appearance information for an object that has surface texture from the acquired images and reconstructed three-dimensional shape of the object under inspection; extracting a plurality of characteristics from the appearance information that was obtained; and evaluating the appearance of the object under inspection by comparing at least one of the extracted plurality of characteristics with a characteristic corresponding to at least one characteristic from preset reference data.
