The modem reduces a burden of telephone uasge cost by reduction of standby line uasge time, and improves the reliability of data and communication. The modem includes a data processor (10) which executes a modem function, an automatic transfer decision unit (11) which decides recovery states of usage line, and determines a transfer mode between usage line and standby line, an examination pattern transmitter (1), an examination pattern receiver (3), an error detector (4), an error counter (5), and an automatic transfer decision unit (6).
