PURPOSE: A washing machine and a damper for the washing machine are provided to prevent excessive vibration through a variable damping force and minimize a transmission force through the damper in a normal speed. CONSTITUTION: A magnetorheological fluid(MR-fluid) container(540) reciprocates in a cylinder(510). A damping sheet(570) is touched to an inner periphery in the cylinder and an outer periphery in the MR-fluid container. A MR-fluid is filled in the MR-fluid container. A piston rod(520) in a piston is penetrated into the cylinder. A piston head(530) of the piston reciprocates in the MR-fluid container. Magnetic field forming units(550a,550b) form a magnetic field in the MR-fluid container.
