The method involves designing a waste container (2) as a container with waste concrete shield (4), or as a casting container, or as a steel container. A single, ready-made waste container is subsequently provided with a protective sheath (6) of metal or plastic. The waste container, which is already loaded with radioactive waste and subsequently closed by a cover (5), is made available. The protective sheath completely or peripherally surrounds a bottom (8) and lid side of the waste container. The waste container is sealed with the protective sheath in a gas-tight manner. An independent claim is also included for a waste container for the transport and storage of radioactive waste, particularly for disposal.
