PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fatty alcohol-based nonionic surfactant having excellent surfactant properties equal to that of an alkylphenol-based nonionic surfactant, and utilizable in a wide application field. SOLUTION: The nonionic surfactant is synthesized from a fatty alcohol having≥80 wt.% content of 12-14C compounds, and represented by general formula (1): RO-(AO)n-(EO)m-H. The surfactant is derived from a compound in which the content of the unreacted alcohol is≤4 wt.% and which is represented by general formula (2): RO-(AO)n-H. [In the formulas, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing≥80 wt.% 12-14C compound; -(AO)n- is a homo- or co-polymer chain of a 3C and/or 4C alkylene oxide; -(EO)m- is a homopolymer chain of ethylene oxide; m and n are each an average number of added mols, and within a range of 2-8, and a range of 0-100 respectively].
