Foreground and background pixels designated by a user are used as reference pixels. Ones of three-dimensional divided color spaces to which the reference pixels belong are used as reference divided color spaces. The color distance between each of the reference pixels and a respective one of adjacent pixels is calculated, and further it is determined whether the adjacent pixels belong to the reference divided color spaces. The costs of the adjacent pixels are calculated based on the foregoing calculated color distances and also based on the weighting based on the determination of belongingness to the reference divided color spaces. One of the adjacent pixels exhibiting the smallest cost is defined as a foreground or background pixel. The color distance calculation, the determination of belongingness, the cost calculation and the definition are repeated with the defined adjacent pixel used as a reference pixel, thereby extracting a foreground area from an image at a high speed. |
