Provided are: a water adsorbent for an organic electroluminescence display element having hydrophobic properties and no reduction in water-absorption speed; and a production method for same. The water adsorbent for an organic electroluminescence display element is characterized by having as the main component thereof calcium oxide particles having an alkoxide layer on the surface thereof. The production method for the water adsorbent for an organic electroluminescence display element is characterized by the drying of the calcium oxide after dry-pulverization of same in the presence of alcohol.
