METHOD, APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING THE VALUE OF A COEFFICIENT FLAG A method of determining the value of a first significant coefficient flag (e.g., 802) for a first residual coefficient of a transform unit (e.g., 800), is disclosed. The transform unit (800) is configured for encoding residual coefficients of a portion of a frame of video data. A dependency map for the transform unit (800) is selected from a set of predetermined 10 dependency maps based on a scan pattern for the transform unit (800). The selected dependency map excludes a second significant coefficient flag (e.g., 805) located adjacent to the first significant coefficient flag (802). The determination of the value of the first coefficient is independent of determination of the value of the excluded second coefficient. A context index is determined for the first significant coefficient flag (802) by using each 15 significant coefficient flag identified by the dependency map and compensating for the excluded second significant coefficient flag (805) using at least one significant coefficient flag of the dependency map.
