PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve automatic selection of the operating state of a speed control system, in particular the selection between active and inactive states of an adaptive speed control system, so that a high availability of the adaptive speed control system and a system response proper for the driver are achieved in a wide range of operating situations while appropriately taking into account the results of blindness recognition. SOLUTION: A method for selecting the operating state in a speed control system for motor vehicles, comprising a distance sensor and an automatic blindness recognition system, is characterized in that at least one other condition (S7) is verified for automatic disconnection of speed control in the case of sensor blindness and in that the disconnection is only carried out when the other condition is fulfilled.
