The invention relates to a device that uses a radiation source with a spectrum containing the so-called UV-C zone. The radiation source is placed next to a tube holding the opaque liquid to be sterilized, which should have an inner diameter of 1 to 20 mm and be made of a material transparent to radiation of said wavelength range. Obstacles are placed in the tube that are capable of diverting the flow of the foodstuff so as to induce turbulence in the liquid flow, thereby significantly increasing the effectiveness of the interaction between the radiation and the foodstuff. Possible radiation sources that may be used include traditional, known sources of UV-C light, such as mercury lamps or LEDs (light-emitting diodes).
