A metal carbonate compound is deployed as feed material in a process for sulfur removal from flue gases and is converted partially to gypsum. The carbon dioxide is separated in form of sodium carbonate. The sodium carbonate extracted from the process is used as filling material during plastic production or during the production of colors or varnishes.
