The present embodiments disclose the preparation of hyperpolarized 13C dialkyi succinate compounds and hyperpolarized 13C dialkyi fumarate compounds and their use in real time, in vivo metabolic imaging of the TCA cycle. In another embodiment, a composition is provided, the composition comprising hyperpolarized diethyl 1-13C succinate and diethyl 1,4- 13C succinate.
