Improvements relating to gas producers

Producers for generating water gas or a mixture of coal gas and water gas from pulverized fuel by means of a circulating current of highlyheated steam and gas have a gas-heating chamber or accumulator 11 communicating with a reaction chamber 8 through a passage 10 ending in one or more upwardly-directed nozzles 7 located in a refractory beam extending across the chamber. During the heating stage gas from a producer 12 is passed through a preheater 14 to a burner 15 to which air is supplied by a fan 16 through the preheater and a pipe 17. Combustion products from the accumulator pass to an exhaust flue 19 through a waste-heat boiler 18 and'. the preheater 14. For the gasification stage the gas and air valves 20, 21 and dampers 22, 23 are closed and the fuel is fed by a small volume of primary gas under pressure (water gas or superheated steam) through a pipe 6 to the nozzles 7. The gas circulation is maintained by a steam injector 24, gas passing through the chamber 11. and mixing as a secondary current at about 1200‹ C. in the nozzles 7 with the primary gas and fuel. Gas and ash are discharged through one or more outlets 26 and a pipe 27 into a dust separator 28, newly-formed gas passing through a pipe 30 and scrubber 32 to a holder 33. A fusible plug orthermostat may actuate means to cut off the injector steam supply and the fuel distributor motor 3 on the dust separator reaching an excessive temperature. In a modification, the gases are discharged from the reaction chamber into the conical lower chamber of a waste-heat boiler which serves as a preliminary dust separator and also houses a steam superheater. Gases discharged from the heating chamber 11 may be utilized for drying the fuel before being ground.
