PURPOSE: A target and a hard coating film-coated cutting tool are provided to coat the tool with a Zr-added coating film which has a high thermal conductivity, thereby reducing the wear of the tool in a cutting test so that heat doesn't remain on the surface of the tool so far as possible. CONSTITUTION: A target has a composition represented by Cr1-x-y-zAlx[Ni1-aZra]yMz, and has a relative density of more than 95%. The target is used for forming a hard coating film for a cutting tool. Here, the M is at least one element selected from a group of Ti, Nb, Si, B, W and V, and also here, the a, x, y and z satisfies the conditions of 0.5ΔxΔ0.8, 0.01ΔyΔ0.35, 0ΔzΔ0.2, 0.51Δx+y+ZΔ1 and 0.2ΔaΔ0.5. The hard coating film-coated cutting tool comprises a base material and the hard coating film. The hard coating is formed by the target which is formed on the surface of the base material.
