<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display hierarchical information for transition to a higher hierarchy or lower hierarchy with good operability when tracing folders which are made hierarchical. <P>SOLUTION: A data processing apparatus generates an omission element for omission display of hierarchical information which is not an object to be displayed according to the number of pieces of hierarchical information which can be displayed in a display area (S811) as one folder element or expansion element is indicated (S801). Then the position for arranging the generated omission element for the hierarchical information to be displayed in the display area is determined.
