[Class 16] A book containing classified matter in tabular form such as a dictionary, numerical tables or catalogue comprises a plurality of mutually superimposed individual prebound sections each constituted by a plurality of superimposed sheets folded centrally and nested one within the other, the leaves of each section having reference bearing tabs extending in terraced form substantially from top to bottom of the leaves in that section, so that the sections form a thumb index extending continuously from top to bottom of the successive sections. The superimposed leaves of each section with the exception of the last leaf are cut away as shown in Fig. 2 to provide terraced tabs 21 .. 36, extending substantially from top to bottom of that section. Each tab bears a reference or references corresponding to an item of classified matter at one end of a column on the leaf bearing the tab. The location of each section may be indicated by means of tags such as S and T when the book is made up of sections of equal width superimposed in neutral registration as shown in Fig. 2. Alternatively, the book may be constituted by sections of increasing widths echeloned as shown in Fig. 5, in a direction transverse to that in which the classified matter arranged in columns on the pages is scanned in which case the cover 70 is provided with a wedgeshaped member 71. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) sections of constant width are echeloned longitudinally of the pages the tabs being provided along a transverse edge of the book ; in this case wedge members are provided on the inside of both covers of the book one at the top and one at the bottom thereof. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) the book comprises main and secondary parts each having its sections echeloned as shown in Fig. 5 to provide an index. The main part is carried by a wedge-like part while the supplementary part is carried by a hinge strip such that when the book is closed the terraced tabs interfit. In all constructions the index may appear along the left-hand edge of the book instead of the right-hand edge to facilitate manipulation of the book with the left-hand. The references on the tabs comprise one or more letters or numerals each of which by reason of its formation and/or position on a tab establishes the position in which that letter or numeral occurs in the classified item to which that letter or numeral refers. Additional references may be applied adjacent to individual items on the leaves. |
