An image encoding method that prevents the degradation of image quality in multiview video, improves encoding efficiency, and: determines whether a first reference picture is included in a nonbase view comprising a block to be encoded (S12); if the first reference picture is determined to be included, specifies the temporal distance between the block to be encoded and the first reference picture as a first temporal distance (S16); if the first reference picture is determined not be included, specifies a value greater than zero as the first temporal distance instead of the above mentioned temporal distance (S14); generates a prediction image by the weighted addition, in accordance with the first temporal distance, of a first block indicated by a first vector and included in the first reference picture and a second block indicated by a second vector and included in a second reference picture (S20); and calculates the difference between the block to be encoded and the prediction image (S22).
