PURPOSE: A portable terminal and a controlling method thereof are provided to differentiate operation mode of a display device and operation mode of a portable terminal based on the distance from an external display device. CONSTITUTION: A wireless communications unit(110) performs communication with at least one external display device. A distance detecting sensor(142) senses the distance between the display devices and a portable terminal device. A control unit(180) senses the distance from a specific first display device through the distance detecting sensor. The control unit searches operation mode of the first display device which is within the detected distance. The control unit transmits a command signal to the first display device to perform the searched operation mode through the wireless communications unit.
