The method involves engaging a switching position in a transmission by a transmission control unit that is simulated by a driver of a motor vehicle through an operating device in a sequence. The reverse transmission is controlled by a transmission control unit during transmission after sequence of a predefined debounce time when the driver actuates the operating device during actuated foot brake of the motor vehicle based on a position. The operating device is unchanged in the position during the debounce time.
