Mercerizing.--The wetting and shrinking action of alkali mercerizing lyes upon natural and artificial cellulosic fibres is improved by the addition of a mixture of phenols, including halogen phenols, with alicyclic carboxylic acids. In examples, raw or purified commercial mixtures of naphthenic acids together with raw cresols, xylenols or p-chlorphenol, or a mixture of raw xylenols with colophony is added to alkali lyes used for p mercerizing sized cotton fibres. Abietic and pimaric acids are mentioned as suitable alicyclic carboxylic acids; chlorcresols are also mentioned. Specification 279,784, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], is referred to.
