An actuator 10 comprising: a first part 12 arranged to be driven relative to a second part 18; a locking system 24, 30, 26 having a locking condition in which it is arranged to inhibit relative movement between the first part and the second part and a non-locking condition in which it is arranged to permit relative movement between the first part and the second part; and a release system 26 movable to a release condition in which it changes the locking system from the locking condition to the non-locking condition, wherein the locking system is arranged to mechanically change from the non-locking condition to the locking condition upon the first part assuming a predetermined position relative to the second part. The locking system may comprise resiliently deformable claws 24 including one or more pawls 24a.
