An item of luggage suitable for transport across snow and ice comprises a built-in sledge pivotally attached to the base of the suitcase 2. The device consists of a plastic uni-body sled 4.1 that, when deployed, covers the wheels and prohibits them from clogging up with snow. The pivotal attachment mechanism consists of a spring loaded axle 7.1 biasing the sled into a deployed state. A button provided on the luggage handle 1 releases the locking means 3 and triggers deployment of the sled. The mechanism allows the user to return the spring loaded sledge to its in-line position engaging again with the locking means. A counter spring may also be provided to dampen the opening torque. The mechanism is designed to work on a variety of two and four wheeled suitcase designs, with functionality, durability and the manufacturing process in mind.
