Apparatus for heat treating an article 70, the apparatus comprises a furnace 20 and a removable insert 30 which is located within the furnace 20 and extends around its inner periphery. The insert 30 defines a space which accommodates a fluidised bed 50, the insertâ s size being selected depending upon the size of the article 70 to be heat-treated. Located at the base of the furnace 20 is a distribution plate 60, in which there are a plurality of apertures. The distribution plate 60 supports the insert 30, the fluidised bed 50 and an insulated base plate 80 on which the article 70 is located. When the apparatus is used cooling gas 100 may be directed at a portion of the article 70 and a thermally insulative layer may be applied to a surface of the article 70 which is in contact with the fluidised bed 50. The article can be metallic, for example a blisk. |
