<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuator for optical elements which can be driven with high sensitivity in first and second directions orthogonal to each other. <P>SOLUTION: The actuator for optical elements supports the optical elements to be driven in the following two directions: a focus direction X and a tracking direction Y. The actuator includes a holder 110 for holding a lens 100, two first mounting faces 111a and 111b provided on the holder 110 to face each other across a central axis O<SB>1</SB>of the holder 110, flat focus coils 131 and 132 mounted in parallel to the first mounting faces 111a and 111b for generating driving forces in the focus direction X, magnets 151 and 152 for directing a magnetic field to the coils 131 and 132, and springs 140a and 140b for supporting the holder 110 to be driven in the focus direction X and tracking direction Y.
