<PICT:0390498/III/1> An abrasive article or compound has mixed with the abrasive grains, yielding or resilient particles, for example, of pith, bark, vulcanized rubber, or leather, whereby oversized abrasive grains embed themselves in the resilient particles, the pressure over the whole of the grinding face is equalized, and scratching by the oversized grains is avoided. An abrading or lapping compound may comprise 3 per cent by weight of bark flour, 30 per cent fused alumina grains, and 67 per cent plastic vehicle, for example starch paste or a colloidal solution of Bentonite. The grains 7 of abrasive material may be caused to adhere to the surface of the resilient particles 6 by milling in a ball &c. mill, and may be fixed in position by a coating of rubber, resinous material, etc.; the particles may be mixed with a vehicle, attached to paper or cloth, or bonded by resinous materials, rubber, &c. |
