PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical or food composition containing ginsenoside Re is provided to activate AMPK in liver cells and to prevent or treat fatty liver. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating fatty liver contains 1-50 wt% of ginsenoside Re as an active ingredient. The fatty liver is non-alcoholic fatty liver. A food composition for preventing or treating fatty liver contains 1-50 wt% of ginsenoside Re as an active ingredient. Ginsenoside Re is isolated from ginseng or red ginseng by thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. The ginseng includes Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, Panax quinquefolium, Panax notoginseng,[Panax japonicum, Panax trifolium, or Panax pseudoginseng.
