The method involves distilling bilge water under reduced pressure to purify hydrocarbons in the bilge water such as mixture of water and hydrocarbons, from an engine room of a merchant navy ship before discharge or recycling process. An ejector (2) is utilized for extraction of non-condensable products of bilge water in an enclosure, where the ejector is supplied by a forced flow of oily water in a closed loop in a setting tank. A buffer tank circuit allows pumping of oily water. Hydrocarbon phase is separated from the aqueous phase during pumping of oily water.
