<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of improving both display luminance and display quality in three-dimensional display. <P>SOLUTION: A light modulation layer containing a bulk and fine particles is fitted inside a light modulation element adhered to a light guide plate. Both the bulk and the fine particles have optical anisotropy, and their response speed to electric fields is different from each other. If an electric field is applied on the light modulation layer, light axis of the bulk and that of the fine particles cross each other at right angles in light modulation cells.
