Saponaceous products are obtained by sulphonating esters, including thioesters, obtained from hydroxy or mercapto fatty acids alkylated, arylated, aralkylated or cycloalkylated at the hydroxy or mercapto group and which always contain a hydroxy group, an aryl residue or a double bond. For the sulphonation, sulphuric acid, oleum, chlorsulphonic acid or sulphur trioxide or its organic addition compounds may be used and solvents, diluents and dehydrating agents may be employed. In examples, the following esters are sulphonated, concentrated sulphuric acid or chlorsulphonic acid, in some cases with ether as a diluent, being employed: phenoxyacetic octyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octodecyl and oleyl esters, the ester of paraffin alcohols with phenoxyacetic acid, ethoxyacetic oleyl ester, thiodiglycollic monooleyl ester, hydroxyethoxyacetic octyl, octodecyl and dodecyl esters, the esters of hydroxyethoxyacetic acid with the alcohols from coconut fatty acids, and b : g -dihydroxypropylhydroxyaceticdodecyl ester. The acid required for the manufacture of the latter ester is prepared from monochloracetic acid and the mono sodium salt of glycerine. The samples relate to the sulphonation of phenoxyaceticcyclohexylester, phenoxyacetic n-butyl ester, a -phenoxystearicbutyl ester, a - phenoxystearicphenylester, cyclohexyloxyaceticoleyl ester and benzylmercaptoaceticoleyl ester.
