<p>A first sub-assembly (M1) of preset values of parameters is created as a function of the values of the operating parameters of the internal combustion engine (1) and an adaptation of another sub-assembly (M2) of values of parameters is made using correlation ratios as a function of the created values. The operating states of the engine are determined as a function of the values of the parameters. The sub-assembly of created parameters is associated with a domain of preset operating parameters and the values of the parameters relative to a domain of operating parameters at least partially different from the domain of preset operating parameters are adapted as a function of these created parameters. The first sub-assembly of values is associated with a first part of the exhaust gas purification system and the other sub-assembly is associated with another part of the exhaust gas purification system or with the complete system. The exhaust gas purification system has a first and a second catalyzer (7, 6) and the first sub-assembly of values is associated with the first catalyzed and the second sub-assembly of values is associated with the second catalyzed. The first catalyzer is a NOx and/or SOx storage catalyzer and the second catalyzer is a three way catalyzed preferably mounted upstream of the first catalyzer. A parameter associated with the upstream catalyzer, in particular extinction temperature, is altered when a parameter associated with the NOx storage catalyzer changes. The parameters are chosen from the following: (i) the upper and/or lower temperature limit of a conversion plateau; (ii) the threshold extinction temperature of HC or CO; (iii) the upper limit of raw emissions of one component of the exhaust gas containing a nitrogen oxide, sulfur, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or hydrocarbons; (iv) the upper limit of a mass flow of exhaust gases; (v) the upper limit of a NOx and/or SOx load and/or a capacity for storing oxygen in the purification system or in one of its sub-systems; (vi) the upper limit of a component of the exhaust gas containing NOx, SOx, CO, CO2 or HC downstream of the purification system or one of its sub-systems. The internal combustion engine can operate with a poor mixture or with a stratified load. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the above process, with an engine management system (3), containing a correlation device (16), where the preset values are used to create the required parameters.</p> |
