<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of expanding blue cross-section light distribution in the vicinity of an LED by a simple constitution without causing cost increase. <P>SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus comprises: a white LED for illuminating a document surface; a cylindrical light guide 7 which guides light outgoing from the white LED and incident through an incidence plane 7a in a main scanning direction; and a photoelectric converter which converts light outgoing from the outgoing plane 7b of the light guide 7 and reflected by a document surface to an electric signal to read a document image. On a surface opposite the outgoing plane 7b of the light guide 7, plural prisms for light diffusion are arranged along the main scanning direction.
