The base (20) of the rod-shaped light source (18) is installed in a holder (16) within the hollow foundation portion (14) of the housing (11). Between this portion and the reflector (12), a constriction (28) above the radiant element (24) accelerates natural convection (Z) for more efficient removal of heat by unimpeded flow of air through openings (31) in the back (30) of the foundation (14). Cool air is sucked through openings in the region (D) above the constriction (28). USE/ADVANTAGE - With e.g. high-pressure Na or Hg vapour of halogen lamps, base temp. is reduced and lifetime prolonged without constraints on aesthetic appearance.
