This method for charging a battery is used for the purpose of charging a solid secondary battery having a positive electrode active material layer, a negative electrode active material layer, and a solid electrolyte material layer formed between the positive electrode active material layer and the negative electrode active material layer. Specifically, the method for charging a battery has: a step of acquiring or estimating the temperature of the solid secondary battery; and a step of over discharge process wherein, in the cases where the temperature is at a predetermined temperature or higher, the voltage of the solid secondary battery is reduced to a rated voltage or below by performing over discharge and/or external short-circuiting with respect to the solid secondary battery prior to a step of charging the solid secondary battery.
