<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system achieving a reduction in the size of a focusing mechanism system and quick focusing, being compact, and having excellent optical performance, and to provide an optical device using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The zoom lens system comprises, in order from the object side: a first lens group having a negative refractive power; and a second lens group having a positive refractive power, and during zooming from a short focal distance end to a long focal distance end, the first lens group and the second lens group move so as to decrease the distance between them. In the zoom lens system, the first lens group comprises, in order from the object side: a first-a lens group having a negative refractive power; and a first-b lens group having a positive refractive power.
