<PICT:0441586/III/1> Ammonium nitrate in a form capable of solidifying on cooling is obtained from nitric acid and ammonia gas, while utilizing the heat of neutralization and solution for concentrating the salt, by intermixing nitric acid solution and ammonia gas in fine distribution in the lower part of a mass of fused ammonium nitrate already formed and boiling at normal or reduced pressure. Vacuum treatment may be effected in a second vessel. Ammonia and aqueous nitric acid are heated in a preheater 2 to 70 DEG C. and are then introduced in fine distribution into the bottom of a saturator 1 filled with boiling ammonium nitrate solution. The vapours escaping at 3 pass through a blower 4 into a saturator 5 which is supplied with fused melt from the saturator 1 via a pipe 7, with the aid of a vacuum pump 6. Any ammonium nitrate in the vapours from the saturator 1 is thereby absorbed. The salt free vapours are utilized in the pre-heater 2 and are then condensed in a condenser 8. The fused mass is tapped off through a pipe 7 into a water-cooled vessel 9 with the aid of suction applied via a pipe 9 and is then led into crystallizers 10.
|
