The method involves providing a connecting unit (15) for connecting a diagnosis device (1) to an electronic control unit (2) i.e. CPU (19), and executing a program on a test scenario by a processing unit (11) integrated into the diagnostic device. A point of change of the electronic control unit is substituted. Diagnosis determined by the electronic control unit and substitution results of a value related to a diagnostic test case are compared. Positive diagnosis of the electronic control unit is established if the comparison is satisfactory. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing an electronic control unit.
