[Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIV] A rotatable centre for a lathe or the like has a casing in which ball and roller bearings adapted to take transverse and longitudinal compressive forces are arranged, each bearing being independently sustained in axial direction by a yielding support in the casing. The interior of the casing 1 may be stepped, Fig. 1, and yielding rings 8 of elastic material such as leather or rubber interposed between the bearing rings and the casing, or the interior of the casing may be cylindrical and the bearings arranged for limited sliding movement therein, Fig. 2 ; a flowing material such as grease or oil may then occupy the space 13 and a piston 28 backed by a spring 26 arranged to compensate an increase of pressure on the centre. Instead of a flowing material, a granular or pulverulent material such as steel balls or filings may be used. A pressure gauge and hand-operated piston may replace the spring 26 behind the plunger 28 and instead of or in addition to the packing ring 25, Fig. 2, a thrust bearing provided with small balls may be used. |
