The present invention relates to a grilling device for preparing food. The grilling device has a grill plate (3) with a grilling surface against which food items are locatable to be heated, a heater (22) to heat the grill plate (3) and a reflector (16) to reflect heat towards the grill plate (3). The grill plate (3) also includes a temperature sensor (22) configured to detect the temperature of the reflector (16) and a control unit configured to control operation of the heater (22) dependent on the temperature detected by the temperature sensor (22).
