[Class 144 (ii)] A dual chamber " safety " pneumatic 'tyrein which the inner tube 10 is normally spaced from the inner tread portion of the cover 20, leaving an inflatable space between this tube and the cover, the tread 13 and sidewall portions of the tube are reinforced by inextensible material, the base-portion 12 being extensible so as snugly to hug the rim. As shown in Fig. 3, the side walls of the tube are provided with reinforced flaps 23. Inflation is effected through a valve 11 directly into the tube 10 from which, through a small aperture 22, air passes into the space under the tread of the cover. In the event of deflation of this space, collapse of the tube 10 is delayed owing to the slow seepage of air through the bleed-hole 22. For use on flat-base rims, the rim-seating portion of the air-tube may be reinforced by circumferential wires or like reinforcing material. In further modifications, the air-tube is open to the rim and has edgeflaps air-tightly sealed between the tyre-beads and the rim. The outer faces of the tyre-beads may be formed with rim-engaging sealing- grooves as described in Specification 648,976. |
