A shuttle (20) includes a chassis (28) made up of first and second chassis portions (30, 32) and an article-carrying area (38) between the chassis portions (30, 32). One of the chassis portions (30, 32) comprise an operation module. This operation module comprises a motor, a pair of wheels (34), an encoder adapted to sense the position of the shuttle and a controller for receiving external commands and data rom the encoder. The controller controls the motor accordingly.
