Novel bone marrow components and methods of their use

The present invention relates to a bone marrow component comprising at least one capillary embedded in a bone culture wherein the capillary comprises (i) an inner cell layer of endothelial cells surrounding an inner lumen that is connected to the vasculature, and (ii) an outer cell layer comprising mesenchymal cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts; and wherein at least part of the distal end of capillary is dilated compared to the proximal end and at least part of the dilated area has an outer cell layer that is physically separated from the inner cell layer. The present invention further relates to a method of monitoring bone marrow status of a subject comprising detecting at least one bone marrow component of the invention within a bone marrow sample provided from a subject.
