<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device in which the number of setting operation of classification of a program when performing recording or recording reservation operation is reduced and to provide a recording method. <P>SOLUTION: A recording device of an embodiment includes a user registration part, an input part, an operation mode setting part, an association part, a recording part, and a display control part. The user registration part registers a user. The input part inputs user specification information for specifying the user. The operation mode setting part specifies the user from the registered user on the basis of the user specification information and sets an operation mode corresponding to the user. The association part associates a program to be recorded or on which a recording reservation is made with the user corresponding to the set operation mode. The recording part records or makes a recording reservation of a program.
