The apparatus has the instrument air terminal which is adjoined by heatable oxidation catalyst, switchable unit, flow restrictor and photoionization detector. A solenoid valve is provided for allowing passage of compressed air through the catalyst to the photoionization detector, so that the catalysts are permanently held under the constant pressure of compressed air. An independent claim is included for method for measuring and diluting content of oil, hydrocarbon and oxidizable gases in air or compressed air.
