A fire having a front frame 15 defining a central opening 16 and, below the fire opening 16, a fixed panel 17 below which is located a cover panel (19, fig 1) which can be turned about a horizontal axis from a closed position upwardly to an open position to expose the region behind. Cover panel 19 can simulate an ash pan cover, and the region it covers can contain fire controls 20. A frictional (fig 3), counterbalance (figs 4 & 5), latch (fig 6), sprung over-centre (fig 7), slotted hole (fig 8) or keyhole (fig 9) mechanism keeps the cover panel 19 raised in its open position. The fire can be coal, wood or gas burning, or electric. Opening 16 can have a glass panel across it. |
