Class 70 A setting composition is prepared by boiling wood chips, sawdust, or like fibrous vegetable material in an aqueous solution of washing soda or a suspension of lime for at least two hours, allowing the' treated fibrous material to drain for at least two weeks and then mixing with portland cement, calcium chloride and water, to form a plastic mix. The wood is preferably in the form of chips one inch square and one-sixteenth to one-eighth inch thick. Filling or reinforcing materials such as split bamboo cane or cornish stone may also be added to the mix. The moulded products are preferably exposed to air for four weeks before use, the surface may be treated by grinding or polishing and may be further treated by applying a black, white or coloured mineral oxide or crushed cornish stone, silver sand or granite chippings.</p> |
