The method involves setting a portion of a target gas component in a gas measuring chamber (114) to a predetermined value. Known portion of the gas component of gas is calibrated on a first electrode (120). Pumping current (Ip) is adjusted between second electrode (116) and a third electrode (118) i.e. pumping electrode, such that predetermined Nernst voltage is set between the first- and third electrodes. The pumping current is sensed to perform the calibration process. Influence of temperature difference between adjacent electrodes is partially compensated during calibration. The first- and second electrodes are designed as reference electrodes. An independent claim is also included for a sensor device comprising a sensor element.
