The belt grinder (1) has a roller assembly (7) that drives a closed grinding belt (13) with a working head (3) movably mounted on a machine frame. The roller assembly has a contact roller (9) with an associated rotation axis and a contact area (11) where the contact roller comes into contact with a workpiece. A grinding device (15) is provided on working head and is provided with grinding wheel (27) and drive device for rotatably driving the grinding wheel to engage with the workpiece. The grinding device is linearly moved along a travel direction of the working head.
