<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hermetic compressor that can reduce circumferential stress against any excessive load to be applied to an inlet valve without degrading intake efficiency of refrigerant gas. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided a hermetic compressor of high reliability and high efficiency in which the end face of a rib 108 arranged in an intake hole 107 is formed low with respect to the surface of a cylinder 103 side of a valve plate 104, so that the end face is not brought into contact with an inlet valve 110, but brought into contact therewith only during the excessive load such as that during compression of liquid refrigerant.
