A method of processing a liquid in a main channel (12) that includes a main volume for containing the liquid and channel walls (14) enclosing the main volume, and an inlet (16), a said channel wall including at least one resiliently deformable wall section (20), the method comprising: introducing a liquid into the main volume, actuating the deformable wall section (20) to cause its deformation so it moves into the main volume to partially block the main channel and thereby form a nano-channel (30). The method may be used with concentration polarisation and/or depletion zone isotachophoresis by applying an electric field across the nano-channel (30) to provide concentration polarisation across the nano-channel, wherein each deformable wall section (20) and the portion of a said main channel wall (14), where the nano-channel (30) is formed, includes a material capable of carrying a surface charge in the presence of a liquid. |
